Lisa Ling is doing an investigative report on puppy mills for National Geographic. I believe it's on this Friday.

How much is that doggie in the window?
Monday I had the day off work. Who ever heard of Easter Monday? I know it's weird but who cares if it gives me the day off. So I did a little shopping at my favorite store - Three Dog Bakery. And I'm glad I did - 50% off on clothing. They carry a line of dog coats that I just love called Millie. They are the best coats but a little on the expensive side. With 50% off, it's quite the bargin. So here's Arlo in his new coat. Sadly, he is able to wear it right now because of the snow in the forecast for today. Spring, anyone?

Best Friends
People that know me know that I am a huge animal lover. Some might even call me the Dog Whisperer but that's a story for another time. I have been following Best Friends for a while now and think they are a wonderful organization. I was so excited to see that Nat Geo produced a show called Dog Town. You gotta check it out. Check out their website and watch the show.

Animal Rescue League
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is in the process of raising funds to build a new animal shelter in Des Moines to serve central Iowa and beyond. The state-of-the-art facility will be a safe haven and learning center for animals and people. Scores of animal lovers and long-time supporters have already joined the effort to make the new shelter a reality.

Sleep over
Arlo and Minnie have a friend hanging out with us this week while her parents are in Puerto Rico. I wondered if it was going to be a difficult transition with one more dog but it's been really easy. All of them get along very well and Arlo loves having a playmate more his size. So far so good.
And Sasa is a sweet little girl!

McDonalds and Hedgehogs
Hedgehogs, spiny creatures which are native to Africa, Asia and Europe, are so beloved in Germany that they led McDonald’s Germany to introduce a new, hedgehog-friendly design for its McFlurry ice cream treat containers. Two years ago, McDonald's Germany was contacted by BUND, one of Germany’s largest environmental groups, which reported that up to 100 hedgehogs had been killed as a result of being caught in the lid holes of the popular McFlurry treat.

On a Roll
North Shore Animal League rescued three chihuahuas when they were 10 weeks old. They were beautiful little chis in everyway expect they were born without front legs due to irresponsible breeding. I have been following this story on and off for a while. I read recently they have been adopted and now have little carts to get around. Click here to read the latest news about them.

Billy Goat
Billy the boxer has become the constant companion of the 12-day old kid called Lilly. He sleeps with the goat, licks her clean, and protects her from any dangers at Pennywell Farm wildlife centre at Buckfastleigh, near Totnes, Devon.
The kid was abandoned by her mother when she was only a few hours old and adopted by paternal Billy when his owner Elizabeth Tozer began hand rearing the goat. The unusual bond has developed over the last month and the pair are now inseparable. Elizabeth said: “Lilly follows Billy around which is really quite amusing to watch and Billy sleeps with the goat and cleans her mouth after she feeds.”

Support Stiffer Penalties for Repeat Abusers
SF 2258—Penalties for Animal Abuse
SF 2258 is a great bill that will protect Iowa’s animals and people in several ways:
1. It increases the penalties for animal abuse if the perpetrator has a previous animal abuse conviction—second convictions would be Class D felonies.
2. Felony-level animal abusers would be required to undergo psychological evaluation and treatment. Studies show that animal abusers frequently move on to harm people, so psychological intervention is a critical preventive tool.
3. The bill also provides more protection for equines.
